What's in the case
Sweet bread on one shelf,
lunch on the other.
Conchas and pan de huevo next to pupusas, tamales and tortas. A Mexican bakery that also happens to make the neighborhood's breakfast burrito.
The shop
A corner of E Cherry that smells like sugar and coffee.
Three wheat stalks burned into the wood counter, an orange awning over the sidewalk tables, a case that fills up before the door opens. Ten stools, two big tables, and a chalkboard that has been redrawn more times than anyone has counted.
-
Eat in or take away
Tables inside, wrought-iron chairs out front under the awning.
-
Bring your own cup
Twenty-five cents off your coffee. It says so on the board.
-
Whole cakes to order
Six, eight and ten inch, plus cheesecake and fruit cheesecake.
-
Open every day
Doors at seven, Monday through Sunday. Holidays go up on the board.
Above the espresso machine
Somebody drew a dachshund out of bread crust, gave it a latte, and it never left.
The board changes. The dog stays. Bring your own cup and it will cost you twenty-five cents less.
